Open Question: How can I get custody of my daughter?

I have an eight month old baby and she is absolutely everything to me. Her father is doing heroin on and off, drinks at least once a week and just seems not to care too much about her. I want it to be official, I want her to be in my custody. I work part time so I can't afford a lawyer. I'm trying to get as many hours as I can but I still can't afford one.
